On May 23, 2001, I was standing on the highest summit in the world. I was 23. The journey started in Lhasa, Tibet. Flying through the dusty streets in a jeep, I looked at dancing darchor hill to the side of me as we headed to the base camp. There were no paved streets or railways like there are today, and just the approach itself to Qomolangma was an adventure. Fast forward about a month and a half, and I was standing on its peak. Whatever lead me to climbing the other Himalayan mountains – it all started from there.

世界最高峰エベレスト(標高8,848m)。チベットでは「チョモランマ」と呼ばれている。2001年、23歳の石川直樹は、チベット側からこの山に登頂。当時の世界最年少で、七大陸最高峰登頂を果たした。10年後にネパール側から再登頂することになるエベレスト、さらにローツェやマナスルといったヒマラヤの高峰へ向かう旅の出発点こそが、このチョモランマ遠征である。
2013年末から14年初頭にかけて再訪したチベットの街と人々の暮らしも収録し、写真家 石川直樹を惹きつけるきっかけとなった、はじまりとしてのチョモランマを紹介する。「Lhotse(ローツェ)」に続くヒマラヤ写真集シリーズ第二弾。
