“Portraits” presents work from “Misunderstanding Focus”, which debuted earlier this year, as well as a new piece entitled “Coexistence”. The portraits from “Misunderstanding Focus” were created by taking 200 shots of a single person over a span of 3 minutes. The images are then stacked and carved into to reveal the subtle differences and movement of the subject. The result is a series of a completely new kind of “portrait” – a three-dimensional carving that uses the unconscious movement of the subject to reveal the individuality of the persons themselves. “Coexistence” expands on the concept of “Misunderstanding Focus”, and contains a piece that spans over one meter – the largest work ever created by Nerhol. By stacking and carving into hundreds of layers of mirror-like reflective paper, the reflected image is distorted according to the depth of the layers, and the resulting contorted image becomes the “portrait”.
「Portraits」と題した本展では、今年5月に恵比寿limArt Galleryで発表した《Misunderstanding Focus》シリーズの一部と、新作《Coexistence》を発表いたします。前作は、３分間にわたって連続撮影した200枚に及ぶポートレート写真を元に、撮影間における人物の微妙なズレや動きで生じた歪みに応じてカッティングを重ねた作品。被写体の無意識の動きから発生した人物の「個性」を立体的に抽出することで、写真であり彫刻でもある、ジャンルを超えた新たなポートレート作品が生み出されました。一方、新作《Coexistence》はそのポートレートの概念から発展した、1メートルに及ぶNerhol最大の立体作品。鏡に似た鏡面紙を使用することで、作品に写し出される景色が彫り込まれた紙の断面で歪み、ねじれた形となって生じる新たな「肖像」が現出します。

2007年にIDEAを練る田中義久とI DEAを掘る（彫る）飯田竜太で結成されたアートユニットです。グラフィックデザインを基軸に活動していた田中と、現代美術を基軸に活動してきた飯田が、 お互いの分野で得たディシプリンを組み込み、新たな基準を提示することを主として活動している。主な 展覧会に SOURCE（2008 CALM&PUNK GALLERY TOKYO）、Nerhol (2009 Takuro Someya Contemporary Art)、Wabi Savvy（2011 A Satellite Exhibition of Gateway Japan Curated by Torrance Art Museum）Misunderstanding Focus( 2012 limArt gallery )等での展示、Commissionとして手塚治虫作品とのコラボレーション、BOSE、JVC(victor) のNEW MOTION C.I 等に作品を提供。作品集に、「Misunderstanding Focus」、「SOURCE」がある。
