From June to August, 2014, artist Yoshitomo Nara and photographer Naoki Ishikawa traveled together through Aomori, Hokkaido, and Sakhalin, and this special photograph collection is drawn from their photographic records of the journey.
This collection gives the viewer a feel for that irreplaceable trip. Without a reason for starting nor a clear goal in mind, the two traveled “further and further north,” learning about the life and the history of the areas through the people that they met and the unseen landscapes that they encountered along the way.
This publication continues the countdown form of the tabloid series from “5,” “4,” “3,” and “2,” that started in January of 2013. From Gentaro Ishizuka and Masaru Tasuki, to Naoki Ishikawa, Ryuta Iida, and Takashi Tanaka, this series has presented the works of artists from a range of genres, and presenting those various artistic worlds in an editorial design that makes use of the charming quality of the paper tabloid form.
Furthermore, starting on January 25, 2015, the Watari Museum of Contemporary Art (Shibuya, Tokyo) will be holding “to the north, from here: Naoki Ishikawa and Yoshitomo Nara exhibition.” The exhibition will focus on the photography, but also the journals and the equipment used during the trip from Aomori to Sakhalin, as well as introducing the artistic background of both of the artists. このたびSLANTでは、タブロイド紙「1」を発刊いたします。
2014年6月から8月にかけて、美術家・奈良美智と写真家・石川直樹が一緒に出かけた青森、北海道、サハリンの旅の記録から、主にサハリンで撮影した写真を収録しています。 二人はどちらからともなく誘い合い、北へ向かう旅に出ました。人々との出会いや新しい風景との邂逅を通じて立ち現れた、二人の「北へ/北から」の視線を感じ取っていただければ幸いです。
2013年1月にスタートしたタブロイドシリーズは、「5」から「4」「3」「2」とカウントダウン形式で刊行。 石塚元太良+田附勝、石川直樹、飯田竜太、田中貴志ら、さまざまなジャンルの作家をとりあげ、タブロイドならではの質感やサイズ感を活かしたエディトリアルデザインでそれぞれの作品世界を表現し、話題を集めています。
また、2015年1月25日(日)より、ワタリウム美術館(東京都渋谷区)にて、「『ここより北へ』石川直樹+奈良美智展」が開催されます。青森からサハリンまで至った旅の写真を中心に日記や身の回りの品などを展示し、二人の創作の背景も紹介されます。あわせてご高覧ください。

奈良美智／Yoshitomo Nara
1959年青森県弘前市生まれ。美術家。1987年愛知県立芸術大学修士課程修了。1988年ドイツのデュッ セルドルフ芸術アカデミーに入学、卒業後もケルンを拠点に作品を制作。2000年に帰国、以後精力的に作品を制 作し国内外の展覧会で発表を続ける。近年では2012年、個展「君や 僕に ちょっと似ている」が横浜美術館、青森 県立美術館、熊本市現代美術館を巡回(2013年まで)。同年個展「青い森の ちいさな ちいさな おうち」を十和田 市現代美術館にて開催。創作の日々や旅の記録を写した写真作品でも知られ、写真集「the good,the bad,the average…and unique.奈良美智写真集」(リトルモア)「奈良美智写真帖 2003-2012」(講談社)を出版。
石川直樹／Naoki Ishikawa
1977年東京都生まれ。写真家。東京芸術大学大学院美術研究科博士後期課程修了。人類学、民俗学などの領域に関心を持ち、辺境から都市まであらゆる場所を旅しながら、作品を発表し続けている。『NEW DIMENSION』 (赤々舎)、『POLAR』(リトルモア)により、日本写真協会新人賞、講談社出版文化賞。『CORONA』(青土社)により 土門拳賞を受賞。著書に、開高健ノンフィクション賞を受賞した『最後の冒険家』(集英社)ほか多数。最近では、ヒマラヤの8000m峰に焦点をあてた写真集シリーズ『Lhotse』『Qomolangma』『Manaslu』『Makalu』(SLANT) を4 冊連続刊行中。最新刊に写真集『国東半島』『髪』(青土社)がある。
