For the first time in 10 years since 2012, Naoki Ishikawa set out for Manaslu, and on September 28, 2022 stood atop the true summit.
After a Japanese team made the first successful ascent in 1956, Manaslu has gone on to be summited by many climbers. This includes, however, many who never reached the highest point of 8,163 m (26,781 ft). There are a number of peaks near the summit of Manaslu. The peak just in front of the true summit is only 7 or 8 meters closer, and only a difference in elevation of about a meter. The snow beneath your feet on that final small stretch can easily give way, and so most people turn back at that point.
Ishikawa also “summited” Manaslu in 2012, but he turned back at the same place.
In 2022, Ishikawa revisited Manaslu in order to reach the true summit beyond. He advanced during the breaks in the turbulent weather that took many lives in avalanches, and finally reached the highest point. Progressing along a dangerous path with reduced vision, and confronted with strong winds that caused frostbite in his cheeks, Ishikawa states that “my impression of Manaslu had changed completely.”
The “Manaslu” 2022 edition is a collection that includes four new images taken during Ishikawa’s second expedition in 2022 to Manaslu.

石川直樹は2012年以来、10年ぶりにマナスルに向かい、2022年9月28日に本当の頂上に立ちました。
マナスルは1956年に日本隊によって初登頂されて以来、多くの人に登られてきましたが、最高点である8163mまで行かずに登頂が認められてしまう時代が長く続きました。マナスルの頂上付近には、いくつもピークがあり、真の頂上の直前のピークは距離にして7〜8メートル手前、標高差わずか1メートルほど。その先は足元の雪が崩れやすく、多くの人がそこで引き返していたのです。
石川も、2012年にマナスルに“登頂”したものの、同地点で引き返していました。
2022年、石川はその先にある真の頂上に立つべくマナスルを再訪。雪崩によって負傷者が続出する大荒れの天候の合間を縫い、ついに最高点に到達しました。頬に凍傷を負うほどの強風に晒され、視力も低下するなか進んだ険しい道のりに、石川は「マナスルの印象が一変した」と語ります。
2014年にSLANTから出版された写真集「Manaslu」をベースに、2022年の二度目のマナスル遠征で撮影した新作4点を収録した写真集「Manaslu」2022edition。
