On September 30, 2012, Ishikawa successfully climbed Mt. Manaslu (8,163 m), which means “Mountain of the Spirit” in Sanskrit. This exhibition presents the photographs that were taken during that more than one month expedition.

“Manaslu (8,163 meters at the peak) is the eighth highest mountain in the world. Situated in the middle of Nepal among the Himalayas, it is fairly well known in Japan because it was first successfully scaled by the Japanese army in 1956. On September 30, 2012, I reached the top of the mountain with camera in hand, and then in the same day, descended to the base camp, completely exhausted. My head and body had turned completely white, but the process of the more than one month long expedition was faithfully stored in the 35 rolls of film that I brought back with me. With this exhibition, the figures of the towering mountains will be condensed into the intimate space of SLANT. I hope that all of you will come and see this special exhibition.”

マナスル（標高8163メートル）は世界で8番目に高い山である。ネパール中央部、ヒマラヤ山脈に位置し、1956年に日本隊が初登頂したことでも知られている。2012年9月30日、ぼくはこの山に中判カメラを携えて登頂し、その日のうちにベースキャンプまで下山して、全ての力を使い果たした。頭も肉体も真っ白になったが、一ヶ月以上におよぶマナスル遠征を共にした35本のフィルムに、その過程は克明に刻み込まれていた。あの高い山の姿と、そこで過ごしたかけがえのない時間が凝縮されている。
