K2,located at the western end of the Himalayas, and the second highest peak in the world (8,611 m, 28251 ft).
Naoki Ishikawa reached the summit of Everest at the age of 23, and 10 years later he completed his second climb of the mountain from a different route. He then went on to join expeditions for the other eight-thousander Himalayan peaks, summiting Lhotse, Manaslu, and Makalu, and in the summer of 2015 deciding on Pakistan’s K2 as his final adventure to higher elevations.
Together with the difficulty of predicting the climate of an independent peak, its incredibly harsh route makes K2 the most dangerous mountain in the world. This summer’s expedition required acclimatization on the neighboring Broad Peak (8,047 m, 26,400 ft), and waiting daily on the necessary conditions for summiting K2 to fall in to place. However, with each day the avalanches increased, and Ishikawa’s expedition was finally forced to retreat from its plan to summit K2.
The new approach from Pakistan different from previous expeditions, the Baltoro Glacier visited twice including during the preliminary inspection, the daily life in the base camp amidst the steep Karakoram mountain range, the night spent in unrelenting anxiety at extreme elevation – each of these events along the journey are thoroughly captured by Ishikawa’s camera in medium format film.
“I definitely want to climb this mountain again.” This collection condenses into one book the strong memories that Ishikawa came to feel during his K2 expedition from this summer.

石川直樹は、23歳のときに初めてエベレストに登頂し、10年後には別ルートから二度目の登頂を果たしました。その後もローツェ、マナスル、マカルーをはじめ、ヒマラヤの8000メートル峰へと遠征を重ね、2015年夏、高所への旅の最終地点としてパキスタンのK2を選びました。
K2は独立峰であるがゆえに天候の予想が難しく、ルートが厳しいことも相まって、世界で最も危険な山といわれています。今夏の遠征では、隣にあるブロードピーク（8047m）でも順応を行い、K2登頂に向けてさまざまな条件が整うのを待つ日々が続きました。しかし、日を追うごとに雪崩の回数は増え、石川たちの隊はついにK2からの撤退を余儀なくされます。
これまでの遠征とは異なるパキスタンからのアプローチ、下見を含め二回訪れたバルトロ氷河、峻険なカラコルムの山々に取り囲まれたベースキャンプでの日々、極度の緊張感に満ちた超高所での一夜、そうした長旅の道程を、石川は中判フィルムカメラによって余すことなく撮影しました。
